The most Important Herb in Ayurveda: It will not be wrong to say that Ashwagandha is one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine system. It is an ancient herb and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine system for the last 3000 years. The word Ashwagandha is a Sanskrit word derived from two different words ashwa (horse) and gandha (smell). It refers to both its unique smell and ability to increase strength. The botanical name of Ashwagandha is WithaniaSomnifera. It is also known as Indian ginseng and white cherry. The Ashwagandha plant is a small shrub. It has white yellow flowers and it is native to India and North Africa. The extracts or powder from the roots or leaves of this plant is used to treat different variety of conditions.

Effect on Doshas:

Ashwagandha is a miraculous plant. It treats various ailments. It aggravates the Pitta dosha and pacifies Vata andKaphadoshas.

In fact Ashwagandha can be good for all dosha types and constitutions but is especially used to balance excess Vata and Kapha. The reason is that it has heating, oily and strengthening nature. However, people with excess of pitta should avoid its use or should use it in moderation.

It’s best to use during the fall and winter months as these are the Vata and Kapha times of year. Ashwagandha can be very useful for those in their Vata stage of life – over the age of 50 but especially in the 60’s.

Benefits of the Various Parts of the Plant:

  • • Leaves: The antioxidant qualities of leaves are useful for treating viral infections and various types of flues. It might be useful in case of Covid 19 (however, not much research has been done in this direction).
  • • Flowers and seeds: Ashwagandha flowers have aphrodisiac qualities which helps in fertility and problems of stone.
  • • Roots: Roots are the most crucial part of the plant. They are used in many medicines. Roots are aphrodisiac, anti-bacterial, anti-diabetic and anti- depressant. Thus we can say they have in them the qualities of treating almost all sorts of ailments.

The most important thing is that ashwagandha gives immunity, which is not important but also vital in this Covid era
